By way of background, opening thoughts: Pepperwood Grove, part of the Don Sebastiani and Sons portfolio, provided an updated tasting sample of chardonnay from the Green Box series, which I have favorably reviewed in the past.
Original tasting and review : This is Pepperwood Grove Big Green Box Chardonnay, California, non-vintage, offered in a three-liter plastic-lined cardboard box with spigot, (on the left in photo), finished at 13.5% alcohol.
In the glass: Medium light yellow, with a slight olive cast.
On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows light butterscotch and a hint of machine shop metal on the nose. From the aroma, seems like this will be soft and easy.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact full and slightly toasty butterscotch, with sweetness supporting the flavors, but resolving to a clean finish with a minor hint of charred oak. Full, friendly and lush.
In summary: Overall, rates a full three full stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this an awesome value at a "practically free" price.
