By way of background: This review samples pinot grigio, which is appearing more and more frequently as a friendly, go-to white wine. The varietal is actually pinot gris, typically when grown in Italy. However, pinot gris grapes in the United States have also adopted the "pinot grigio" designation. This is a value-priced California, pinot grigio, made by the ubiquitous Jenna of San Martin, California, and distributed as part of a Wine Insiders mixed case offering. The "California" designation and label description of the wine provide no further clue to the whereabouts of the wineries from which the juice for this pinot grigio came. Initial review, April 2011: This is Bayshore Vintners Pinot Grigio, California, 2009, finished at 12.8% alcohol.
In the glass: Clear with soft light yellow.
On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows bright lemon with a touch of used sponge. From the aroma, seems like this will be light and perhaps sweet. I note the sponge aroma fades very, very quickly.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact round in the palate, actually quite mouthfilling, with off-dry fresh butterscotch and perhaps a touch of peach. Shows very light acids mixed with honey around the edge. The finish lingers, but slowly fades with no cloying sweetness.
In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale. Pleasant, friendly choice, with lighter food, or on its own as a sipping wine.
Following long decant, three hours in decanter at room temperature: No sponge aroma now... all clean with light, gentle, soft, perfumed sugars. Palate is very consistent with the aromas, soft, billowy, perfumed. Acids are almost entirely evaporated, except for the mildest bite on the finish.

Updated review, over a year later, June, 2012: Consistent color. The spongy aroma is gone, with light, soft butterscotch citrus in its place. The palate retains the earlier elements of dry butterscotch and very light peach. A soft, simple sip. Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: The aroma stays consistent and the palate picks up a touch of light honey.
