By way of background, opening thoughts: Gloria Ferrer wineries are better known perhaps for their champagne-style wine than for their pinot noir.  Today, however, we will give the pinot noir a trial.

Original tasting and review, September, 2011: This is Gloria Ferrer Pinot Noir, Carneros, Sonoma, CA, 2007, finished at 13.9% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep, light red with brick overtones.

On the nose: Poured at a slightly-too-warm room temperature with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows bright full raspberry and black cherry.  From the aroma, seems like this will be full and robust.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact drier and more old-world than expected.  Shows hints of leaves and oxidization, although with some evident fruit poking through.

In summary: Overall, rates two stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its classic structure.  May have just touched, or perhaps slid slightly past its peak age.  Wine Enthusiast had this as a 94-pointer upon its initial release, but did suggest that it be drunk young.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle:  Soft and yielding on the nose.  Poured cooler than in the first tasting, shows less oxidation character and a better balance to the fruit.  Touches three stars now.

Updated review, over a year later,  September, 2012:  Medium red in the glass, with light red berry nose.  Soft leaves on the palate, with full fruit.  Still three stars.
