Chateau Bianca Gewurztraminer 2006

Price: $13.99 @ liquor store in Porter Square
Recommended by: just a domestic Gewurz we have not tried
Comments: We were not impressed by this. It doesn't even really taste like a Gewurz. There is no real exotic spice flavor that you would expect; instead it's a bouquet of flowers. A strong bouquet. There are also subtle flavors of pineapple, lime, and honey, but it's mostly a bouquet. Not terrible, but not our favorite, and we won't likely be picking this one up again soon.

Comments: This wine was listed in the Boston Globe as one of the best wines you can find for under $10. We agree! It is similar to Gruner Veltliner on the nose but exhibits flavors of both Gewurztraminer (spice) and Sauvignon Blanc (fruit) on the palate. Flavors of lime are most present, tempered with a buttery smoothness and a nice spicy finish. We had it with sushi (surprise!) and it was a fantastic pairing. It went particularly well with the sweetness of the unagi (eel). We'll be looking forward to this one again soon.

Comments:
We usually drink Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand (and some from Napa) and love them, but this wine will force us to think about other regions. Petit Bourgeois is a bright, tangy wine that has no shortage of flavor, yet finishes very smooth. Flavors of pineapple loom large along with a pleasant, forward grassiness. It was a great complement to our yummy veggie sandwiches on a hot summer day. Not our favorite, but we would buy this again.

Recommended by: 90 points by Wine Spectator
Comments: We have been drinking mostly whites this summer, but decided to switch to red tonight. We normally enjoy Spanish red blends, and this one is no exception. It was very good! It is a blend of 50% Monastrell (Mourvèdre), 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Tempranillo, and 10% Merlot. It is a dry wine but has a nice, bold fruity flavor; the variety of grapes integrate with the tannins quite nicely. We would really enjoy this with pizza!

Dona Paula Shiraz-Malbec 2006

Price: $12.99
Recommended by: gift from Mike
Comments:
We were delighted when our friend Mike brought this wine over, but we chose poorly when we ordered Chinese food to accompany it. The Chinese food was great, the wine was great, but the pairing didn't quite work. This wine, with 60% Shiraz and 40% Malbec, will go better with other foods, particularly grilled meats. It has a nice, earthy, cherry flavor with hints of cocoa and tobacco, and it exhibits a long smooth, happy finish. For the price, this is a great wine, and we look forward to trying it again soon!

Cusumano Nero d'Avola Sicilia 2010 Wine Review (NW)

Tasting notes:

Red currants and herbs on the nose

Medium bodied on the palate

Moderately tannic finish with wild berries and herbs

Summary:

This is a good, simple, and somewhat rustic wine from one of the noteworthy producers on the island of Sicily.  For $10, this is a "you get what you pay for" wine.  It doesn't merit a lengthy review, but it's worth recommending as an introduction to the Nero d'Avola grape.  Serve with hearty Italian fare or homemade pizza, and raise a glass!

Tasting notes:

Rich and spicy notes of black cherry and blackberry on the nose

Full bodied on the palate

Dark fruit finish with good length and notes of savory herbs

Summary:

More and more Chianti Classico wines are taking on a dark and extracted style, and this one shows those qualities.  The fruit is dark and the texture is rich, accented by savory herbs and spice.  It should stand up to rich food and be considered a reliable buy at $13 or so.  The Chianti Classico Riserva by Querceto is another one to look for as an alternative- priced a few dollars higher.  Raise a glass!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Regaleali Nero D'Avola 2008 wine review by (PB)

Cherry red hue with wild cherry fruit wafting from the glass at a distance. Deeper n the glass aromas morphs to a tart cherry with subtle hints of licorice.

Palate--Slightly tart fruit with integrated tannins and sharp acidity with a smokey finish that gives way to more fruit.

The Sicilian Nero D'Avola grape is one of my favorite easy drinking economy wines that will pair well with all sorts of Italian foods (as well as others) and cheeses.

I paid $10 for this end of vintage wine and it's a solid one so raise a glass!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Creative Commons: Attribution - ShareAlike 2.5 applies

Tasting notes:

Vivid notes of rich blueberry, blackberry, and herbs on the nose

Full bodied and firm on the palate

Wild berries, spice, and intensity on the finish

Summary:

Vivid and intense are two words that sum up this wine.  The fruit is vividly expressed in the bouquet and on the finish.  The persistent layers of dark fruit are intense.

Tensley makes very good vineyard-designated Syrah in Santa Barbara County, CA, and I recommend this one as a strong expression of the style of Syrah produced in this region.  This one was a nice find at a restaurant with some colleagues.  The retail price is approximately $40.  Raise a glass!

Villa Pozzi Nero D'Avola 2010 Sicily

To contact us Click HERE

The Sicilian Nero D'Avola, truly a hearty grape that makes for a full bodied red, is grown at the Villa Pozzi vineyards located in the hills surrounding Marsala, Salemi and Mazzara del Vallo, in the western part of the island. The high altitudes of between 1000 to 1300 feet are where mountain vineyards make for hard working grapes.

Fermented in stainless steel and aged briefly in oak giving up aromas of black cherry, spices, tobacco and anise, while on the palate are a nice complexity of licorice, glycerine, a fruity lushness, with a ripe, chewy texture, spice, again cassis.

This is a very good food wine for between $8 & $11, comes in a screw top bottle, works well with pizza, pasta red sauce or red meats.

Feudi del Pisciotto Versace Nero d'Avola IGT 2009

Made from 100% Nero d'Avola grapes fermented in stainless steel, aged in barriques (50% new, 50% used) for 10 months with another 6 months in bottle.

Expressively intense and fruit forward, with pretty aromas of blackberry pie, fruit compote and baked strawberry, while flavors are on the sweet side of dry with bing cherry and hints of blue fruits.  Mild tannins are balance by fresh acidity and finish is long. Average $14/ bottle, good price for this gem.

This wonderful Morellino di Scansano is a Tuscan blend of mostly Sangiovese with a bit of Alicante and Malvasia Nera. Dark bluish ruby colors in the glass, as boysenberry and vanilla aromas permeate intensely, with exotic dark licorice scents and even a bit of wild underbrush, while on the palate resinous dark chocolate notes with cassis and red berries fill the mouth. Nice balance and long finish. Found this one at Il Poeta Restaurant.

Astica Malbec 2011 Cuyo Argentina

Made with hand-harvested grapes from vineyards throughout the Cuyo/Mendoza region of Argentina, just east of the Andes, this stainless steel fermented 100% Malbec is a decent showing for the price (ranges from under $4 to $7).

Dark ruby colors in the glass, pastel aromas of violets and blueberry under a palate of blackberry and spice, pepper and hints of mint or eucalyptus, with a medium finish.

From Entre-Deux-Mers sub region of Bordeaux, here is a wonderful value in a red Bordeaux blend of merlot 57%, Cabernet Sauvignon 25%, and 18% Cabernet Franc, sustainably farmed, fermented in stainless steel vats, aged in oak barrels for 12 months, and in bottle for a year before labeling.

Dark rose colors with purple edges. Deep violet aromas, fresh mint mixed with complementary earth tones, suggestions of smoked meats, and attractive blackberry notes. Very easy on the palate with ripe cherries, cassis, and licorice... mild tannins but balanced acidity. Nice long finish. Great find on sale at Pop's for under $10.

Vinosia Rajamagra Taurasi 2002 Wine Review (NW)

To contact us Click HERE
Tasting notes:

Dense, dark plum and blueberry notes on the nose with spicy accents

Full bodied on the palate

Dark chocolate and dark fruit on the muscular and rustic finish

Summary:

This is an excellent wine, made from the Aglianico grape in the tiny Taurasi region of Southern Italy.  The wine is powerful and expressive, with great length and rustic edges. At 10 years of age, it still tastes incredibly fresh and youthful.

I paid $40 for the bottle, which is a few dollars below the normal retail price.  I was doing some research on Italian wine regions that are under-represented globally and couldn't pass up the chance to taste this wine.  There's so much good wine produced in Italy that this could be a life-long pursuit, of course.  If you see a wine from Taurasi, check it out.  If you happen to find this one, it's worth the money.  Raise a glass!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Sommavite Brunello Di Montalcino 2006 wine review by (PB)

Light ruby hue with aromas of wild cherry from afar and all kinds of inseparable aromas of spicy herbs, cedar, licorice and more.

Palate-- tasty, hints of wild cherry fruit, bitter unsweetened chocolate mid palate, gentle tannins, rigid acidity and a finish that is a bit abbreviated yet pleasant while it lasts.

I am tasting this right out of the bottle and it is at cellar temperature so it needs to warm up a bit and it needs to air out. *I'll update this after a while.

Plan to serve it with carbonara with homemade linguine in my brand spanking new kitchen!

I paid $20 for this at Trader Joe's and had to grab a couple bottles just because a $20 Brunello is unheard of and the 2006 vintage was a great one on top of that. Right now, it isn't anything special but as I say that remember a Brunello of this year should start around $45 and go up from there. If it doesn't improve it's still a decent valuer so raise a glass!

*After warming up a bit and breathing this wine opened into a full profile wine. Nice!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Creative Commons: Attribution - ShareAlike 2.5 applies

Sepp Moser Gruner Veltliner (Gebling) 2007 wine review by (PB)

Pretty golden hue with large bouquet of crisp apple with vanilla and light citrus notes at the end with a slightest touch of honey.

Palate-- Brightly acidic with a very light "spritzig" (fizz, off dry and very fruity highlighting apple and vanilla notes.

Gruner is the signature of Austria. I have not had a great number of them and some tend to have what I can only describe as an "oily" note in the bouquet which is off putting. This Gruner is actually quite tasty and refreshing.

I paid $5 for this close out wine and its a nice bargain at that price. Do some experimenting and grow beyond the Chards, Chenins and Sauvignon Blancs. There's a big world of wine out there just waiting for your admiration. Raise a glass to new horizons in the glorious world of wine!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Carpe Diem Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 wine review by (PB)

Nice black chery hue with aromas of poultry seasoning, cranberry fruit and sweet Twizzlers with spice.

Palate--A bit hot on the palate with good bright red fruit.

This wine was drunk too young. From the awesome vintage in Napa of 07, the cabs are lengthy and made for some longevity. I paid $17 for this wine and it was well crafted under the direction of Christian Moeuix--the French wine maker and his team in Yountville.

I paid $17 for this I think but it sells for considerably more. If you have one give it another 2-5 years and should be worth the wait. Raise a glass.--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Creative Commons: Attribution - ShareAlike 2.5 applies

Here's a good, spicy, rich style of Zinfandel.  It's jammy, but not overly so.  Four Vines has a nice line up of Zinfandel and the "Maverick" is often available for around $20.  Enjoy with comfort food on a cool Autumn evening.  Raise a glass!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Conde de Valdemar Rioja Reserva 2004 Wine Review (NW)

Tasting notes:

Plum, cherry, and smoky notes on the nose

Medium bodied on the palate

Smooth layers of plum and tobacco on the finish, nicely integrated

Summary:

A style debate has ensued in the Rioja region of Spain lately with some wines showing an obvious modern, extracted style and others a more reserved, subtle style.  This wine is squarely in the more reserved, subtle camp which is considered the traditional style.  It comes across like a smoky Pinot Noir, and with the extending aging done in barrel at the winery it has a smooth and well-integrated profile.  I recommend it as a great example of a classic Rioja, and suggest you enjoy this with a good pork chop or something subtle in flavor. Expect to pay $20, and raise a glass!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Creative Commons: Attribution - ShareAlike 2.5 applies

Casa Ferreirinha Esteva 2010 wine review by (PB)

This Douro (Portugal) red is brimming with big blackberry aromas and a touch of brambles.

Palate--Solid presence with blackberry fruit galore, strict acid and a tannic foundation that is bold.

Finishes with more blackberries. This wine was even a bit impressive the first day but I had the remainder the second day and it was not worth drinking.

So for $10, open it, drink it and raise a glass; don't let it sit around even for a day.--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Creative Commons: Attribution - ShareAlike 2.5 applies

Querceto Chianti Classico 2008 Wine Review (NW)

To contact us Click HERE
Tasting notes:

Raspberry, floral notes, and some brine on the nose

Medium bodied on the palate

More raspberry with some tobacco and savory herbs on the finish

Summary:

This is a pure expression of Chianti Classico.  Recognizing the region's wines have gotten richer and more expressive over the past 10 years, I recommend this as a great example of value priced Chianti Classico that drinks exceptionally well with a variety of food and even has the stuffing for intermediate-term cellaring. Rich fruit and spice with savory accents has become the hallmark of a region that early in my wine career produced light-bodied, acidic red wines that required a certain percentage of white grapes in the blend. Things have evolved nicely in Chianti!

Expect to pay $12-14 for this wine, and raise a glass!

Turley 2007 Napa Zinfandel moore "earthquake" vineyard wine review by Billy

Nose: roses, fruit and earth on the nose.
Palate: Tight tannins and young feeling still.  Acid tussles with the tannin for supremacy in a velvet ring.  Floral flavors here too.  Medium body but definitely still tasting young.
Finish: Long and minerally.
Overall:  I paid list price for this at a wine store several years ago ($56).  Tonight seems as good a night as any to open the special bottle of Napa Zinfandel. This wine should be breathed for at least an hour (this review was after 10 minutes or so of opening).  It can still lay down for a good 3-5 years.  Note: the 2007 was reviewed.  The 2008 is pictured.
Update: After breathing this for about an hour it really opens up.  The tannins relax their grip and the mouth feel smooths out to reveal an expertly crafted and complex Zinfandel.  The aromas go from fruit and flowers to earthy and deep.  This is a delightful wine!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. A glass of wine later I was smiling with eyes closed; faeries and fish gods healing around me. A ogni uccelll il suo nido e bello. Cin CinServed with: I enjoyed it with antipasto skewers. It would go well with quite a variety of things such as, burgers, pork ribs, red sauced pasta dishes, all kinds of cheeses, and luscious dark chocolate; available at Frans Chocolates in Seattle and online.Appearance: Clear bright garnet red with burnt orange edges. On the snoot: A heavy spirit filled with blackberry jam and vanilla perfume.Taste: Huge mouthful of juicy blackberry, tempered with a subtle hint of vanilla. Mid palate has a tiny ring of inoffensive tartness followed by just a hint of tannin on the finish, which is also kind of wet and jammy. Balance:  Rubenesque; such is the nature of red zinfandel...a little light on acid, a little heavy on sugar.Comments: A red wine that people who don't like red wine will enjoy. Though she covers an acceptable spectrum of tasty, pretty, and nicely perfumed, she is lacking in complexity, rendering her a little uninteresting to me. Was she naked? I didn't notice.

Naked Wine Review 105Wine: Rhone Red WineGrenache 65%; Syrah 20%; Mourvedre 10%; Carignan 5%Producer: Vidal-FleuryVintage: 09'Region: France>Cotes du Rhone ControleePrice: 15.00Date tasted: 9/3/12Place tasted: I was holed up in a cheap motel room somewhere in Idaho, hiding from naked government spies.... don't ask.My dear friend and ally, Bob, had come along to help keep me calm and centered. Luckily I'd grabbed this bottle of Cotes du Rhone before we slinked out of town. Locked in our motel room under assumed names, with blinds drawn, wearing stolen clothes and driving a rental car, we felt as safe and warm as if we were living in an old episode of 'Leave it to Beaver'. So why not relax, sip, and enjoy a moment of artificial peace? Good ol' Bob; bad ol' spies. Served with: Moussaka, with it's rich sweet lamby goodness and gentle spices paired beautifully with the wines elegant dry complexities. This wine can handle strong flavors and plenty of acid and herb. Red pasta dishes, grilled meats, strong cheese...all good choices. Stay away from more subtle flavors as the wine will overpower them.Appearance: Dense blood red body with a glowing deep purple soul.On the snoot: Sandalwood and berries laced with wet, nose quenching minerality. Taste: Herb and earth forward with notes of the rare blueberry fig fruit and a slight mid range tang. Finish is long and captivating with peppery firm leather wrapped tannins. She's everything a fine wine should be.Balance: Hot, with light to medium body, high acidity/alcohol, no residual sugar, and a plethora of warm fuzzy little tannins. Very nice.Comments: Let breathe for an hour or so before imbibing. Her perfume is enchanting and her character, exotic yet subtle. You should buy some; and I should buy more.

Les Vignobles Andre LurtonVintage: 09'Region: France>Bordeaux>Bordeaux ControleeBottling Location: Mis En Bouteille Au Chateau (bottled at the chateau)Price: 15.00 seems to be the average costDate tasted: September, it's all been the same day this month. Short month, long day.Place tasted: I tasted this wine comfortably in the memory of a rainy day. I was remembering what air was like and how much I really used to enjoy breathing it. I miss the days before the fires and smoke when undines fell from the sky, singing and gently tapping at my window beckoning me to join in their liquatious celebration. Until we meet again, I will smile with delight in anticipation of our inevitable joyous reunion. Cin Cin!Served with: Grilled sirloin steak & ratatouille. Complements with medium to strong flavors such as herby pasta dishes, grilled red meats, hard cheeses, dark chocolate, and wild wild women. Appearance: Deep cherry red draped in darkness moving with slow viscosity through someone else's moonlight. On the snoot: Heady and provocative, with a warm bouquet of black cherry, sweet pipe tobacco, and vintage leather.Taste: There's that black cherry again, but there's also a plum tree in the orchard. She's a mouthful of fruit leading to a place where smoky leather gently pats the naked fannies of multiple seductive tannins. In the afterglow, lingering visions of cocoa, earth, and peppercorn leave the palate euphoric and wandering through a long, well defined finish. Balance: Medium to full bodied and perfectly balanced with no aspect dominant or missing. She's smooth and dry with the gentle nature, poise, and grace of royalty. Long live the queen.Comments: Now THAT'S a Bordeaux! She's delightful company and eternally sexy, kinda like Catherine Deneuve.
