By way of background, opening thoughts: Here we have a blend of Santa Barbara syrahs from three different vineyards, sampled almost a full decade from vintage date.
Original tasting and review : This is Cold Heaven Second Sin Syrah, Santa Barbara County, CA, 2003, finished at 13.5% alcohol.
In the glass: Deep ruby red.
On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows vigorous, bright, almost-sharp red medicine notes. From the aroma, seems like this will be tangy, possibly sweet and layered, with red fruits.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact very much as suggested by the aromas, but perhaps even more tangy with lots of acids and little tannins remaining. Not tired at all, but zingy bright. Intriguing.
In summary: Overall, rates two stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its longevity and attitude.
Following long decant, fully day under vacuum in partially filled bottle: Deeper, more layered nose, with elements of black cherry liqueur mixing in with the medicine notes. Deep red berries on the palate now, a layered zestiness, slowly unfolding acids and tannins that hold the finish fixed and bright. Jumps a full point with the long decant, to three stars with a plus for an intriguing combination of layers and changes with air.
