By way of background, opening thoughts: The Pepper Pot blend from South Africa is quite different every year.  Thanks, Eric, for this interesting 2011 blend!  Here was the 2009 edition.

Original tasting and review : This is Edgebaston Finlayson Family Vineyards The Pepper Pot, Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa, 2011, a blend of 51% syrah, 24% mourvedre, 12% cinsault, 8% grenache, 4% tannat and 1% viognier, all finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep burgundy with deep brick tones, not quite opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright, deep blackberry and a slight hint of friendly, tangy funk.  From the aroma, seems like this will be quite purple and aromatic, deep.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact full and deep with a fresh, full blackberry, cough medicine element (ie, a hint of eucalyptus).  A nice, sleek oily finish, harboring just the slightest touch of classic South African banana peel.

In summary: Overall, a wine I would completely stay with for the evening, and come back to regularly!
