Comments: Frickin' Almond Husks. That's right. Almond husks. Who the hell knows what almond husks taste like??? I'll tell you who. A pretentious idiot whose opinion about wine you definately do not want to trust. And yet, it's the winemaker that lists among this wine's flavors . . . almond husks. Also (and not surprisingly), the winemaker finds an array of tropical fruits with quince, ginger, and lees. Speaking of which, what the hell does a lee taste like? Denim? But nevermind, we're here to review a wine. And it's a good one, although we're not sure it deserves its place in the top 100 wines of 2007 by Wine Spectator. Although we didn't note almond husk, we did enjoy its pear and grapefruit flavors. The smell is "minerally" apparently, although Rob isn't sure it doesn't have a faint scent of cat pee (but in a good way!). The finish is fairly long and buttery, and a tad bitter, but also in a good way. We would get this one again but we're not sure it's worth the price when some really fantastic Sauvignon Blancs cost less and would pair equally well with similar food (seafood, particularly shellfish).

(PB's) Value Picks from 2012

We've enjoyed some awesome wines this past year and some not so awesome ones. Below are some of my value picks that stood out this past year. Remember to enjoy wine to the fullest, determine your palate--ie., what YOU like and then determine a price point--what you would be willing to pay for an everyday wine--then start drinking making notes so that you can determine some patterns of what you gravitate toward. Once you know what you like, every now and then, go out of your pattern and experiment! There are so many wines produced today, don't bore yourself with the same old same old. Whatever you do, follow our blog to help you with your selections; why spend money on something you know you won't like! And whatever you do, "Raise glass!"

Solid cherry hue with great cherry bouquet with sweet cocoa, some wood and steal. Awesome!

Palate--Perfectly integrated with cherry, tobacco, loads of herbs and balanced complexities that are harmonious and drinking superbly. Delicious!

This is Chianti Classico from the great 07 vintage in all its glory and is worth seeking out. For the money ($20) it is a grand deal so raise a glass!

Montegrossoli "Podere Ciona" 2008 ($14)
Black cherry hue with bouquet of sweet cherry/berry fruit atypical for a wine comprised of 100% Sangiovese. A touch of cedar and dill highlight a wine that smells more like a Cabernet.

Palate--My notes for this were non-existent but the words "Drinking well" and "Delicious" were all I wrote which means I intended to go back to my log but failed to. I have another bottle of this wine but this was an outstanding quaff. At $14 reduced from $28 it's a raise a glass kind of wine!

Columbia Crest H3 (Horse Heaven Hills) Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
Nice deep black purple Syrah-like hue with crazy fruit jumping out of the glass on the pour.

Bouquet of Mint jelly with chocolate touches and great spice with blackberry and currant.

Palate--Super relaxed tannins and bold flavors of tar and berries with huge heavy mouth feel. Lingering finish!

This is a ridiculous value wine worth buying a case and cellaring. $12.50 a bottle and its a lot of wine. Raise a case of this ultra-value wine!

Drops Of Jupiter 2011 ($8-11)
Intensely pigmented black cherry hue

Aromas of huge jammy blackberries with tar, and dark cocoa.

Palate-- Silky, thick presence with big blackberry, extracted style, full bodied; a BIG fruit bomb that finishes with more berries and dark chocolate.

This is a lot of wine for $8.

Jimmy Stafford of the band "Train" (Hey Soul Sister) produces this wine and gives a portion of the proceeds to a San Francisco organization called Save Me San Francisco.

Sourced, blended, California fruit,(my guess is a major portion of Syrah) this is a nice value if you're in the mood for this style of wine so raise a glass.

Citrus and powdery melon with creme brulee notes.

Palate--Robust acidic foundation with nice full flavors of fruit in an off dry style. This is a crisp, easy drinking wine of solid structure.

This is a tasty, crisp California Pinot Grigio for which I paid $5 a real steal so raise a glass!

Oscar's Estate Vineyard 2008 Barossa Valley Shiraz wine review by Billy

Nose: Big Jammy nose of blueberry, plum.  Cracked black pepper and tar.
Palate: Incredibly soft and plush mouth feel.  Like a mouth full of silk.  Soft acid backbone and gentle tannins.  Round and full bodied.  This is a full feeling Australian Shiraz from the Barossa valley.
Finish: Green pepper and blueberry on the finish.  Slight acidic resurgence at the sides of the tongue on the finish gives a memory of youthfulness.
Overall: I paid $16 for this at the local wine store.  Its delightfully full and soft mouth feel makes it uniquely suited for drinking now.  Wait much longer and its structure will edge into flabbiness.  Fruit forward nose combined with gentle finish and softness in the mouth make this an excellent introduction to Barossa Valley Shirazzes for those who want to branch out. L'oca Ciuca or The Drunken Goose is a Tuscan blend of 40% Sangiovese, 30% merlot, and 30% Syrah with pretty violet perfume, aromas of ripe rich and crisp cherries, while on the palate notes of red fruit and cherries with white pepper and anise. Followed by hints of blueberries, vanilla, and especially caramel at the back of the tongue. Soft tannins, nice finish, just an all around winner. This bottle was $34 at Tuscan Hills on Queens Blvd.

Eden Road's The Long Road Shiraz wins Best Shiraz

A wonderful Australian Shiraz I reviewed this past summer, The Long Road Shiraz 2010 has won Best Shiraz in Australia's National Wine Show. Production only began in 2008 when they won The Jimmy Watson Memorial trophy for their first vintage.
"The vineyard for this wine is located in Gundagai, where some of the most exciting Shiraz in Australia is being grown," explains Eden Road's Winemaker Nick Spencer. "The region features basalt-rich soils, which deliver highly perfumed, aromatic wines, and ironstone-rich soils, which provide a mineral, crushed rock and gravelly tannin structure."

Congratulation Eden Road! Well Done!

Naked Wine Review 110Wine: Chateau Puech-Haut Le PrestigeGrape Variety: 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, and 5% Carignan Producer: Philipee Cambie & Eric SolomonVintage: 10'Region: France>Languedoc Roussillon>Languedoc>Coteaux du Languedoc>Saint-DrezeryPrice: 20.00Date tasted: 11/27/12Place tasted: I grabbed my bottle of wine and made sure I was packing a reliable cork screw and balloon glass. Then I danced right through that magic portal into a land of lavender scented rain, waterfalls, and ocean shores. There I sipped my wine in the company of glowing madrona's and colorful starfish; the warm soothing song of the faeries lulling me into sweet serenity. Served with: Italian spinach sausage pie would be good. Serve with strong, sturdy flavors such as lamb, venison, and other red meats. Things like herby red sauces, sharp cheddar or bleu cheese, and rich dark chocolate are good choices as well. Avoid more subtle flavors such as cream sauces and fish. She can handle a fair amount of spice and begs to be somewhat challenged when pairing with food. Appearance: Rich ruby velvet muted with a soft glowing antique light, inspiring memories of quiet old books and simpler times. On the snoot: I see a woman standing in the kitchen of an old country cottage picking spices from a cupboard. There's a vase of fragrant fresh cut flowers bursting forth from the heavy dark oak table behind her. She's preparing a variety of berry pies, tarts, and jams to sell at tomorrows community marketplace. This wine embodies the scent of that image.Taste:  Dense, dry and complex, she is a vision dressed in black current, anise, and cracked pepper. A mouthful of pleasing elements such as earth, mineral and wood accessorize her charming demeanor. The long full and satisfying finish with plentiful soft tannins leaves your palate feeling joyfully blessed and spiritually grounded.Balance: She is perfectly balanced; focused, centered and clear in her intention. She moves slow like lava and displays a full sensuous naked body with no one particular feature dominating another. Comments: This wine takes place in a different time. It's as if you can taste the ancestors in the grapes flowing through ancient vines, like the blood in all of us.

Naked Wine Review 111Wine: P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Bourgogne La Chapelle Notre-DameGrape: Pinot NoirProducer:  P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Pere & FilsVintage: 10'Region: France>Burgundy>La Chapelle Notre-Dame>Bourgogne ControleePrice: 20.00Date tasted: 12/12/12Place tasted: I was in an abandoned tree house in the middle of ol' Grapers back woods. Someone would have asked me if I were alright had I not messed up my trail of bread crumbs. It had snowed on my gold fish earlier which made him happy as he chased the little flakes around his bowl. There was a nice selection of wine in that warm solar-paneled tree house so I chose this French Pinot Noir to sip on as my view expanded over twilights indigo kingdom; crescent moon shining silent and empty on the earths snowy winter facade.Served with: I had it with baked salmon and miso butter served on a bed of spinach and fresh basil garnished with lemon wedges. Fish, chicken, duck, cream sauces, mushrooms, brie...all good choices. Go with subtle flavors to complement the delicate beauty of this wine.Appearance: A pale clear candy apple red through which a gentle neon orange glow emanates. On the snoot: Strong powerful floral nose mingling with strawberries and soft wet moss.Taste: Fruit forward with strawberries, clean and dry. Complexities featuring slight mushroom and sweet earth join the ride in mid palate followed by a slight feather dusting of tannin on the finish which lingers and levitates like a blessing before her final ascension.Balance: Well balanced, light and dry. She is elegant with colorful complexities, depth of character, and well defined integrity. Comments: All good wines go to heaven, and this truly fine Pinot Noir has earned her wings. She tastes like an exotic floral bouquet (and I don't say that to all the wines).
p.s. May you all have a marvelously decadent Solstice & Saturnalia. Exchange garden gnomes, eat human shaped biscuits(good luck getting the one with the bean), drink up the good cheer and drunken naked carol till your cold hard nipples and neighbors can't take anymore. Io! Saturnalia!

Naked Wine Review 113Wine: Cabernet Sauvignon Producer: Girard WineryVintage: 09'Region: California>Napa County>SonomaPrice: 23.00Date tasted: 1/10/13Place tasted: The sky was rich and dark with snow, and somewhere in the distance a hoot owl echoed in deep colors of luminous melancholy. In my survival kit was a bottle of wine, a thermos of hot chili, Bob, and for some reason a New Years Eve noise maker. The budding crescent moonlight reflected my mood beyond the light of sun as I snowshoed my way to a warm fireplace and the comfort of a dear friend. Served with: We had it with my own hot chili mole, which is of course the best chili ever! It is very food friendly, just stay away from fish, cream sauces and more subtle flavors and you'll be fine.Appearance: A black garnet facade that cannot quite hide her deep glowing amethyst soul.On the snoot: Fragrant notes of sweet cherry, wet mineral, and a little basil rise to bless the happy snoot.Taste: Rich jammy fig, black current, and pomegranate rest comfortably on a posh blanket of vanilla and coffee bean with well integrated tannins throughout. Finish is dry and bright with fruit yet heavy with leather and earth which slowly crescendos into an orgasmic release of pure palate satisfaction. Whew, is anyone else warm?Balance: Beautifully balanced with all the proportions I find most attractive in a fine red wine; warm, yet no sticky residual sugars, high in alcohol and acid, and plenty of chewy tannins. Comments: Let her breathe and notice how she opens up like an exotic flower. She's a smooth, dry, complex, and most tasty cabernet. I cannot wait to try more Girard varieties.

From the Calatayud region of Spain this red wine is a 100% Garnacha that is fruit forward, and easy drinking. The vineyards are at a high elevation, the soil gravelly and dry, and the vines are old and gnarly, making the grapes earn their living and producing a really interesting everyday wine with a great price tag of $8.45 (Bottle/case price $5.91... I had a 30% off coupon at Pop's Wines in Island Park, NY).

Aromas are a ripe and jammy red berry with caramel candy, while the palate shows definite balsamic overtones with hints of white pepper and cherry and a good finish.

From Marlborough, New Zealand, a terroir known for amazing Sauvignon Blanc grapes comes Monkey Bay. With pale straw colors, clear and bright, attractive aromas of grapefruit, grass and pineapple, giving way on the palate to bitter pineapple with hints of melon, citrus and lychee. Bright and refreshing with a nice finish which paired nicely with a garlic and parsley poached red snapper (using some of the wine in the poaching liquid) with a side of pasta with fresh pesto sauce.

Tedeschi Capitel San Rocco Valpolicella 2008 Wine Review (NW)

To contact us Click HERE
Tasting notes:

Fragrant nose of black cherry, dark berries, and spicy, earthy notes

Full bodied and chewy on the palate

More of the same on the dense, chewy finish

Summary:

This is the most dense and extracted style of Valpolicella I have ever encountered. While the higher expressions of Amarone from the same Italian region certainly show like this, a Valpolicella Superiore is typically more of a red cherry flavor that dances with minerality. Needless to say, I was surprised by this wine. It tastes great, but it does raise the question of whether or not it loses its sense of place.

Expect to pay around $22 for this wine. Make sure to let it breathe, and raise a glass!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Creative Commons: Attribution - ShareAlike 2.5 applies

Sanguinetti Brunello Di Montalcino 2004 *'Small Vineyards Discovery" wine review by (PB)

To contact us Click HERE

Ruby hue with some bricking at the rim; rustic forest floor notes with traces of fresh cherry fruit with lots of nice, cedary cherry under the fresh fruit.

Palate--Slight cinnamon spice at the front with dry as dust tannins making for a chewy mouth feel; nice, classic Sangiovese dried cherry fruit,a touch of black pepper ending with a lingering cedar/fruit finish.

I received this wine as a gift from a budding neo-enophile and had him over for an appetizer serving him (blind) this wine. He noted that the wine was aged by the color, stated this must be a Sangiovese of around 6 years old. Impressive for such a neophyte!

Well done Thomas; I served it with spinach and cheese raviolis with a prosciutto, cream and porcini mushroom sauce. Outstanding all the way around!

*The "Small Vineyards concept is stated as follows: "Every bottle of Small Vineyards wine bears our gold seal, signifying that the wine is hand-harvested, earth-friendly, and from a family-owned estate. By importing wines from small estates, we are helping to protect unique grape varietals, local wine making styles, and preserve a special way of life."

Review: **** and ***+ $ Martin & Weyrich Moscato Allegro (and Pink Moscato Allegro), California, 2011 = BEST VALUES

To contact us Click HERE
Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Moscato Allegro.

By way of background, opening thoughts: For Valentine's Day, O'Neill Vintners offers a pair of bargain priced, lightly sweet moscato wines that may help set just the right mood.  Both hail from California, are made from muscat canelli grapes and are fermented cold in stainless steel.  The pink version is blended with a touch of red wine. Review samples were provided by the winery's representative.

Original tasting and review : This is Martin & Weyrich Moscato Allegro, California, 2011, finished at 8.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Clear with just a hint of honey.

On the nose: Poured at cool room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright grapefruit peach and stainless steel with a little hint of motor oil.  From the aroma, seems like this will be bold, sweet and energizing.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact very much as the nose suggests: a sweet, clean oil wash across your tongue bringing lightly sweetened grapefruit peach gliding to your cheeks.  The finish moves to a sandy sugar and finishes remarkably clean, given the sweet entrance.

In summary: Overall, rates an impressive four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale. Original, fragrant and pleasurable.  Easy best value.

Original tasting and review : This is Martin & Weyrich Pink Moscato Allegro, California, 2011, finished at 8.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Light strawberry hay.

On the nose: Poured at cool room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows a tangy, lightly funky sweetness, with some of the motor oil elements reminiscent of the straight moscato.  From the aroma, seems like this will be interesting, but not as layered as the Moscato Allegro.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact sweet, fresh, lightly fruity and quite creamy. Soft, easy and clean finish.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for extreme likability.  Best value too.

Review: ***+ $ Redwood Creek Chardonnay, California, non-vintage = BEST VALUE

To contact us Click HERE
Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Redwood Creek Chardonnay.

By way of background, opening thoughts: Redwood Creek is a bargain line of California varietals, in the "practically free" price category.  Ubiquitous too.

Original tasting and review : This is Redwood Creek Chardonnay, California, non-vintage, finished at 13.% alcohol.

In the glass: Medium yellow with olive overtones.

On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows hint of dry butterscotch and well-toned fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be fresh, deep and easy-going.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact softer and lusher than anticipated.  A deep, full rush of clean, velvet fruit coats your tongue, but moves to a clean mid-palate, bringing lightly oaked tones and dry, grilled pineapple elements.  Completely clean finish.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for easy-going pleasantness, a remarkable best value at the price.

Review: *** $ Redwood Creek Merlot, California, non-vintage = BEST VALUE

To contact us Click HERE
Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Redwood Creek Merlot.

By way of background, opening thoughts: Redwood Creek is a bargain-priced line of California varietals.  I just tried the chardonnay and liked it a great deal.  The cabernet sauvigion, which I reviewed earlier, was no great shakes.  Today, I will sample another red, the merlot.

Original tasting and review : This is Redwood Creek Merlot, California, non-vintage.

In the glass: Deep red mahogany, opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows soft and sweet fleshy red berries.  From the aroma, seems like this will be fruity and easy.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact purple bright plum fruit on the mid-palate, with soft, solid body, gentle but with some structure.  Red soft raspberries create the initial impressions, and are followed by a clean and gentle fading finish.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a best value at a practically free price point.  This is either a stronger offering than the cabernet sauvignon, or the offerings have improved substantially in the intervening few years.

By way of background, opening thoughts: Here we're doing a comparison Bourbon tasting, first a new offering from Trader Joe's and then a classic, Bulleit Bourbon

Original tasting and review : This is Trader Joe's Kentucky Bourbon Straight Whiskey, finished at 45.% alcohol and distilled by Bourbon Square Distilling Company, Louisville, Kentucky.

In the glass: Medium light caramel, just a hint darker than Bulleit.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows sweet, bright corn, a bit harsh, definite oak.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact bright, caramel heat, sweet creamed corn, bright alcohol tang.

In summary: Overall, rates two stars with a plus on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
---------------

Original tasting and review : This is Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey, Kentucky, finished at 45.% alcohol.

In the glass: Light caramel, just a hint lighter than Trader Joe's.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows sweet and aromatic tones, some mineral oil, layers of very light caramel, intriguing.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact sweet, layered, lightly oily and aromatic, almost creamy in its fading finish

In summary: Overall, rates three stars with a plus on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.

So, while the Trader Joe's Kentucky Bourbon is a worthy contender, it doesn't hold up to comparisons with Bulleit.

Review: *** $ Liberte Pinot Noir, San Luis Obispo County, California, 2011 = BEST VALUE

To contact us Click HERE
Check out today's pricing and retail availability for pinot noir from San Luis Obispo.

By way of background, opening thoughts: I realize I should probably have high hopes for wines I am tasting.  But here's a bargain-priced pinot noir from a region not at all widely recognized for this varietal that is released when brand new.  Nonetheless, it was highlighted at a nearby Trader Joe's and that confers a glimmer of hope, right?!

Original tasting and review : This is Liberte Pinot Noir, San Luis Obispo County, California, 2011, finished at a mere 13.% alcohol.

In the glass: Light to medium red.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows fragrant, bright fresh red strawberries, raspberries and currants.  From the aroma, seems like this will be tangy and bright fruit salad, perhaps bringing a bit of darker tannins or oak along.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact showing deep red fragrant juiciness plus a solid, deep heft of mid-palate tannins.  Finish is fairly quick but clean.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a best value at its bargain price and a remarkable value by pinot noir standards.

Oscar's Estate Vineyard 2008 Barossa Valley Shiraz wine review by Billy

To contact us Click HERE
Nose: Big Jammy nose of blueberry, plum.
Rocca Barolo 2006 wine review by (PB)

Ruby hue with large cherry bouquet wafting into the air. Forest floor, cedar and earthiness with occasional suggestion of cocoa.

Palate--Cherry fruit with a definite cocoa mid palate nearly overwhelmed by rustic flavors of cedar or spruce. Tannins are surprisingly chunky and still need some time to mature. For a wine with this age on it, it is still immature.

Pleasant with some depth and power; just needs more time. I was given this as a gift and I believe it runs around $35. Barolo's are pricey but almost always worth the extra cost. Save your pennies and treat yourself and someone special!

(NW) of this blog was supposed to be joining us for dinner but Maine winter has interfered.

I will pair this with a Moose/Venison ragout and home made paperadelle and of course I'm raising a glass!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Creative Commons: Attribution - ShareAlike 2.5 applies

A to Z Pinot Gris 2011 wine review by (PB)

To contact us Click HERE
Light straw hue with a big bouquet of all kinds of fruit; ripe honeydew melon, a touch of ripe apple all sitting on top of a foundation of a tropical fruit melange with floral notes.

Palate--Delicious full bodied white fruit all over the palate that is hyper-fruity with a different fruit everywhere you turn. The structure is a touch weak for my preference in the acid arena where I like my whites to cut my tongue but this is adequate. A strong green apple finish that has some length to it.

This Oregon Pinot Gris is crazy tasty and what is amusing is that I grabbed this wine in a hurry thinking it said "Pinot Noir." I paid $14 for it and I'm not disappointed that it wasn't the Pinot Noir after all. The great folks at the Wine Spectator gave this their "Best Value" rating and 88 points; absolutely!

Raise a glass to this tasty Pacific Northwest delight! I will be pairing it with homemade French Onion soup with loads of mozzarella baked on top!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Creative Commons: Attribution - ShareAlike 2.5 applies

Betts & Scholl Black Betty Shiraz 2009 wine review by Billy

Nose: Big blueberry, plum and spicy leather
Palate: Silky smooth with gentle tannins and soft acid core.
Finish: Medium length with plum
Overall:  This 2009 Australian Shiraz comes from the Barossa valley.  At least that is where Betts & Scholl bottle it.  This dark red wine is fruitier and less spicy than other Shirazzes from Barossa. This is possibly because of the wine maker's affinity for Grenache.  And yet the result is an incredibly easy drinking and easily approachable shiraz with big fruit and a soft feel.  I paid about $17 for this at the local wine store.

Original tasting and review : This is 689 (Six Eight Nine) Zinfandel Blend, California, 2010. It is a proprietary blend of zinfandel, syrah, cabernet, merlot & petite syrah, from select Napa Valley vineyard sites.

In the glass: Medium deep red blend, opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows soft, generic red (almost merlot-style) fruit.    From the aroma, seems like this will be easy but quite generic.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact soft and easy as projected, bringing soft red/black fruit with light furry tannins to an easy, soft finish. Clean and unremarkable as it wraps up.

In summary: Overall, rates three  stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
