By way of background, opening thoughts: I realize I should probably have high hopes for wines I am tasting. But here's a bargain-priced pinot noir from a region not at all widely recognized for this varietal that is released when brand new. Nonetheless, it was highlighted at a nearby Trader Joe's and that confers a glimmer of hope, right?!Original tasting and review : This is Liberte Pinot Noir, San Luis Obispo County, California, 2011, finished at a mere 13.% alcohol.
In the glass: Light to medium red.
On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows fragrant, bright fresh red strawberries, raspberries and currants. From the aroma, seems like this will be tangy and bright fruit salad, perhaps bringing a bit of darker tannins or oak along.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact showing deep red fragrant juiciness plus a solid, deep heft of mid-palate tannins. Finish is fairly quick but clean.
In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a best value at its bargain price and a remarkable value by pinot noir standards.
