Castello di Borghese Merlot 2007

To contact us Click HERE

Formerly known as Hargrave Vineyards, Anne Marie and Marco Borghese have taken Castello di Borghese to new heights. They made the oldest vines on Long Island work very successfully for them.

Aged in French oak for 13 months before bottling. Ruby with warmer colors around the edge of the glass. Clear bright cherries with caramel aromas, beautiful essence of rosewater contrasting a strong vanilla, also hints of raspberries and blue fruits, while flavors of ripe cherry compote, cinnamon, and vanilla again, wisps of white pepper combine nicely on the palate. Showing mild, soft tannins, finely balanced with a supple and juicy acidity. A good long finish, 12.5 % alcohol and a great value for a 2007 at $20!

Castello di Gabbiano Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2009

To contact us Click HERE

This Riserva is made only from grapes grown on the Gabbiano Estate in the heart of Tuscany. Only the oldest and best Sangiovese vines on the property are used. Fermented in stainless steel tanks for 20 days, and for more extraction the wine was macerated on the skins for another 20, followed by aging in 50% new French oak for 16 to 18 months, and finally in bottle for 4 months.

Made from a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot, with dark ruby colors in the glass revealing big aromas of pastel strawberry and dark cherry. On the palate a range of flavors evolve from chocolate to vanilla to coffee to mild hints of spicy wood, good tannins showing, a sweet balance and a long, smooth finish.

Eden Road's The Long Road Shiraz wins Best Shiraz

A wonderful Australian Shiraz I reviewed this past summer, The Long Road Shiraz 2010 has won Best Shiraz in Australia's National Wine Show. Production only began in 2008 when they won The Jimmy Watson Memorial trophy for their first vintage.
"The vineyard for this wine is located in Gundagai, where some of the most exciting Shiraz in Australia is being grown," explains Eden Road's Winemaker Nick Spencer. "The region features basalt-rich soils, which deliver highly perfumed, aromatic wines, and ironstone-rich soils, which provide a mineral, crushed rock and gravelly tannin structure."

Congratulation Eden Road! Well Done!

Review: *** $ Apothic Red Winemaker's Blend, California, 2010 = BEST VALUE

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Apothic Red .

By way of background, opening thoughts: Sometimes the "kitchen sink" blends create a nice, balanced wine, particularly in the bargain price category.  Today we will be trying such a blend from various California reds.

Original tasting and review : This is Apothic Red Winemaker's Blend, California, 2010, finished at 13.% alcohol.  It is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot and zinfandel.

In the glass: Deep burgundy red, opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep, lightly oaked fruit, suggesting a long, sweet and smoky palate.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact sweeter, slicker and thicker than anticipated, with rich zinfandel creating the core of the flavors. Red fruit enters into the center palate, also quite rich and sweet.  The fullness and sweetness is surprising given the quite modest alcohol level.  A touch of oak comes into the full, lasting finish.  What Apothic Red may not provide in balance or layers, it provides in pleasure.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a full-fledged best value at its "practically free" price point.

Find retail availability for Almira Los Dos.

By way of background, opening thoughts: Various regions of Spain have been sporting some interesting new world wines on distinctly old world vines.  Here is a grenache syrah blend made of old vine grapes.

Original tasting and review, September, 2011: This is Almira Los Dos Old Vines Grenache / Syrah, Campo de Borja, Spain, 2009, finished at 14% alcohol, and made with 85% grenache.

In the glass: Almira Los Dos is deep magenta, moving almost to opaque at the center of the glass.

On the nose: Poured cool with a moderate decant and swirled vigorously, shows soft raspberry jam and vegetable stew.  From the aroma, seems like this will be eclectic, bright and unique.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact raspberry lollipop on the first sip, followed on by grittier, silty tannic crushed aromatic ripe raspberries.  Fully ripe plums bring an additional sweet element to the palate, which skates along to a fairly lengthy finish.

In summary: Overall, a rich, friendly experience which would draw me back.  A best value.
-------------------

Updated review, over a year later,  November, 2012:  Consistent color and nose.  Ripe raspberries and plums remain on the palate, too, generating a consistent three star rating.

Updated Review: *** $ Caleo Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, Italy, 2009 - BEST VALUE

Find prices and retail availability for Caleo wines.

By way of background, opening thoughts: This is a big, bargain Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, coming in a magnum bottle at a price that would be a bargain for a 750ml.

Original tasting and review, September, 2011: This is Caleo Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, Italy, 2009, finished at 12.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Caleo is deep magenta in the glass.  Not quite opaque anywhere.

On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows twiggy ripe plums.  From the aroma, seems like this will be bright, fruity and possibly rich.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact soft and yielding - almost chocolate - savory fruit and wood in the middle of your mouth.  Balanced and friendly, though not complex.  Finish is clean, but brief.

In summary: Overall, creates more of an impression in the sniff and sip than in the follow.  Yet, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, and is a crazy-best value at the "practically free" price.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle:  Softer, less bright on the nose.  The palate knits nicely.  The finish lingers a little bit longer with cocoa-style tannins.
-----------------

Updated review, over a year later,  November, 2012:  Still deep magenta with brambly fruit.  Clean, light, old-world-feel in the mid-palate.  Fresh clean finish still, and still three stars.

Updated Review: *** $ Vitiano Cabernet Sauvignon - Sangiovese - Merlot, Umbria, Italy, 2007 = BEST VALUE

To contact us Click HERE
Find prices and retail availability for Vitiano Umbria.

By way of background, opening thoughts: Umbria, just east of Tuscany and a land-locked region of Italy's "boot", generates some intriguing, and often value-priced, red varietals.

Original tasting and review, August, 2011: This is Vitiano Cabernet Sauvignon - Sangiovese - Merlot, Umbria, Italy, 2007, finished at 13.5% alcohol.  It is a highly-rated bargain wine which has been cellared to a point four years from its vintage date.

In the glass: Vitiano is deep velvet burgundy, almost opaque in the middle.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows deep, rich plums with a hint of cocoa.  From the aroma, seems like this will be soft and easy-going.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact balanced, bright red and black fruits in the mid-palate, with an interesting wrapper of gently "popping" acids - almost effervescent - and just enough tannin grit to lend real substance.  Ripe plums with a tiny streak of charcoal run into the sides of your mouth, and settle for the modest finish, which is completely clean.

In summary: Overall, rates a full three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a best value at its very modest price. Following long decant, full day in partially filled bottle at room temperature:  A little grittier now on the nose.  Still very solid and consistent on the palate.

Stephen Tanzer rated this an impressively high 91 points, saying, "Ridiculously dark black-ruby color. Pretty aromas of cassis, black plum and earth, with a pronounced vanilla presence that does not overpower the fruit. Rich and densely packed, with distinctly ripe flavors of black fruits, raisin and chocolate lifted by an intriguing balsamic vinegar note. This finishes lighter than it starts, with welcome acidity nicely delineating the borderline-overripe fruit. Finishes creamy and long. This is a lot of wine for the money."
------------------

Updated review, well over a year later,  November, 2012:  Consistent color.  Deep, rich plum and chocolate aroma.  Soft and mellow red and black fruits in the mid-palate.  Still bright fragrant aromatics.  Rock solid three stars, includes significant pleasantness, even after five full years of age.  I just purchased a younger vintage of Vitiano Umbria and will look forward to making the comparative tasting soon.

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Nugan Estate Vision Riverina Shiraz.

By way of background, opening thoughts: This Shiraz hails from a lesser-known region of Australia, the Riverina, New South Wales area.

Original tasting and review : This is Nugan Estate Vision Riverina Shiraz, New South Wales, Australia, 2007, finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep red magenta, not quite but almost opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured and swirled vigorously, shows bold, fragrant fruit with a touch of earth.  From the aroma, seems like this will be red fruited and deep.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact an elegant yet bold, almost old-worldly palate, brimming with cheery, spicy charred oak, and still lusty, earthy red berries.  The red berries linger before settling into the spices that make up the finish.

In summary: Overall, just reaches four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Awesome value at a terrific price point.

Numanthia Toro Termes 2008 Wine Review (NW)

To contact us Click HERE
Tasting notes:

Spicy berries and chocolate on the rich nose

Full bodied and plush on the palate

Berries, licorice, and coffee on the moderately tannic finish

Summary:

Year after year, this is a big, flavorful wine. From the Toro region of Spain, it's made from Tempranillo (locally known as Tinto Toro). The 2008 edition is powerful and nicely layered as well as being a bit more tannic than some prior years.  Enjoy now after decanting or allow it to cellar for a few years. At $26, it's a good buy. Raise a glass!

Thanksgiving and Wine (Thoughts from PB, Reposted by NW)

To contact us Click HERE

A Thanksgiving Day meal with friends and family provides a perfect opportunity to enjoy nice wine. Because so much fuss is made over food and wine pairings in general, I find people get a little stressed out about what to serve guest on this special day. Fortunately, many wines have a much broader range than they get credit for. With that in mind, I have some basic suggestions that might help.

If you are planning a very traditional Thanksgiving meal, complete with Turkey and all the assorted sides, a number of red wines can work well like Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Merlot. All of these varietals have a pretty broad range, except maybe the Zinfandel. However, I put Zinfandel on the list because it works well with cranberry sauce and heavy starches like mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes.

In order to make things even more festive at the table, I suggest you offer guests two wines. This is especially easy if you are able to provide you guests with two wine glasses and allow them to pour and sip as they like. Simply place the bottles on the table and allow your guests to discover the different pairings as they please.

As a rule of thumb, plan for at least a half bottle per person while at the table. Which two wines? Try offering one Cabernet Sauvignon and one Pinot Noir, perhaps both from American wineries in the spirit of the holiday.

While wines at the dinner table are often the focal point, don't forget that you can create a special experience with wines before and after the meal. A nice bubbly is a great way to start the festivities, especially with assorted appetizers or finger food. To finish things off, try a nice dessert wine. Something sweet but light, for example a muscat or icewine, should help wash down the pie. Do this before the coffee.

Eguren Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 wine review by (PB)

To contact us Click HERE

Pours quite dark for a Cab at this price point.

Bouquet--Some nice plum and cigar box aromas trying to fight through the slightly corked musty smell of wet cardboard. Even with that there are notes of dill and cedar.

Palate--Slightly sour and somewhat austere fruit but what's there is good. There is even some interesting spice notes as well.

Most people would not recognize this as being flawed and even with my hypersensitive nose and palate to cork taint, it is marginal but definite.

I grabbed this since it was a 100% Cabernet varietal from Spain which I don't know if I have ever had one before. I paid $9 for it and if this wasn't corked it would probably show as a really decent wine. If I lived near the store I would grab another to give it a 2nd chance and wouldn't hesitate to return it if it was. As I have written before, I almost never have a problem with a store receiving back a bad wine.

So this is worth another go! Raise a glass.

Lighter garnet hue with ample aromas of gentle cedar, slight licorice, sweet vanilla and cherry fruit.

Palate--Lovely integrated flavors of cherry, white bread, green herbs and a beam of caramel or maple that is subtle but delightful.

Trenel Beaujolais Villages Nouveau 2012 wine review by (PB)

Powerful strawberry aromas that are nearly floral contained in a lovely purple hue.

Minerally front with strawberry fruit, deliciously fresh and fruity.

Beaujolias Villages is a step up from the label that simply reads "Beaujolais" nouveau and it costs a couple dollars more. I grabbed it for $12. It is classic Nouveau and both the Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages are wonderful examples of the fruity Gamay grape made in this ready to drink informal style.

This is the year for Noueveau so raise a glass!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Creative Commons: Attribution - ShareAlike 2.5 applies

Luckily I'd grabbed this bottle of Cotes du Rhone before we slinked out of town. Locked in our motel room under assumed names, with blinds drawn, wearing stolen clothes and driving a rental car, we felt as safe and warm as if we were living in an old episode of 'Leave it to Beaver'. So why not relax, sip, and enjoy a moment of artificial peace? Good ol' Bob; bad ol' spies. Served with: Moussaka, with it's rich sweet lamby goodness and gentle spices paired beautifully with the wines elegant dry complexities. This wine can handle strong flavors and plenty of acid and herb. Red pasta dishes, grilled meats, strong cheese...all good choices. Stay away from more subtle flavors as the wine will overpower them.Appearance: Dense blood red body with a glowing deep purple soul.On the snoot: Sandalwood and berries laced with wet, nose quenching minerality. Taste: Herb and earth forward with notes of the rare blueberry fig fruit and a slight mid range tang. Finish is long and captivating with peppery firm leather wrapped tannins. She's everything a fine wine should be.Balance: Hot, with light to medium body, high acidity/alcohol, no residual sugar, and a plethora of warm fuzzy little tannins. Very nice.Comments: Let breathe for an hour or so before imbibing. Her perfume is enchanting and her character, exotic yet subtle. You should buy some; and I should buy more.

Complements with medium to strong flavors such as herby pasta dishes, grilled red meats, hard cheeses, dark chocolate, and wild wild women. Appearance: Deep cherry red draped in darkness moving with slow viscosity through someone else's moonlight. On the snoot: Heady and provocative, with a warm bouquet of black cherry, sweet pipe tobacco, and vintage leather.Taste: There's that black cherry again, but there's also a plum tree in the orchard. She's a mouthful of fruit leading to a place where smoky leather gently pats the naked fannies of multiple seductive tannins. In the afterglow, lingering visions of cocoa, earth, and peppercorn leave the palate euphoric and wandering through a long, well defined finish. Balance: Medium to full bodied and perfectly balanced with no aspect dominant or missing. Where the hell was I? Honestly, I don't think anyone has ever been to THAT place before, naked or otherwise. It was cold. It was dry. It was sunny, and it was hot as well. The last thing I remember I can't remember...know what I mean? I think God was with me, or was it Bob? Thank Dionysus there was a good bottle of wine there so I could at least go mad in style. To the Cult of the Souls! Cheers All.Served with: Fried green tomatoes with dollop of Greek yogurt, and marinated grilled chicken. Her light floral nature goes well with dishes that most white wines also agree with, such as chicken and vegetables; she will also work well with simply prepared red meats. She's pretty versatile; you could even serve chilled if that's your thing. Avoid with seafood or heavy cream sauces.   Appearance: A very light and clear garnet with burnt orange refractions. She'll light up your glass when she pours into it.On the snoot: Sandalwood and strawberry combine in a haunting perfume. Quite heavy on the sandalwood, she has an enchanting presence. Love the snoot.Taste: She makes a grand and unforgettable entrance dressed in rich flavors of juicy strawberry, bright and quenching without being sharp or edgy. Earth and wood incorporate with jammy fruit and just a sprinkle of pepper in mid palate. Finishes long and satisfying with soft tannin and a slight hint of tobacco. Balance: Medium to light weight with beautifully toned legs. She packs a fair amount of acid; light on tannin and alcohol, sugar too, for that matter; thin, but healthy and full of energy. She's happy, well balanced and sane. I wonder what that's like? Comments: From what I've heard of Beaujolais I did not expect to be that impressed. Wrong! I am simply smitten. She is bursting with depth and character. A well dressed, poised, and brilliant woman of a wine...not the giggling little girl that I expected. Citrus and powdery melon with creme brulee notes.

Palate--Robust acidic foundation with nice full flavors of fruit in an off dry style. This is a crisp, easy drinking wine of solid structure.

Chateau Hyot 2010 wine review by (PB)

Garnet hue with aromas of understated dark berry and a touch of sour cherry and green spice;

Palate--Chewy tannins with some darker berry flavor and a couple other things trying to fight their way out of a youthful foundation. The youthful foundation is winning. Smokey finish that is fleeting.

This wine is too young to enjoy but shows some potential. This is a 70% blend of Merlot with 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Cotes de Castillon. There are some solid value wines coming out of this Bordeaux region.

I paid $15 marked down from $20 but it just isn't ready. The Wine Spectator gave this wine 90 points with a vastly different review than this one which does not occur very often. If you find it for $15 or less I might grab a couple and lay them down. they may reward you in a couple 3-5 years. Raise a glass of something more mature and have a great Thanksgiving day! Nicely pigmented black cherry hue with solid tantalizing aromas of sweet dill, with bold black cherry/berry underneath.

Palate--Fruity cherryish front with sweet berry foundation and lip smacking tannins. This Rhone blend of Granache 60% and Syrah 40% works well together.

At nearly 6 years old this wine has a lot of life left in it and should improve as it integrates with a bit more time. At $15 this was a solid value so raise a glass and even buy a couple more!--A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Creative Commons: Attribution - ShareAlike 2.5 applies

Pale gold with aromas of bright melon, hints of peach, and dynamic notes of citrus.

Palate--Sweeter than usual style perhaps but perfectly integrated and balanced out by a beam of juicy acidity. Tasty fruity, tastes like a good Riesling.

How can you not love Gewurztraminer the grape with the hard to pronounce name? Say-- "Ga VURTS tra MEEN er" and raise a glass of this under $8 varietal. Great as an aperitif or with oriental or spicy and hard to pair Mediterranean food. --A Review from The Wine Cask Blog. Creative Commons: Attribution - ShareAlike 2.5 applies

Deep ruby colors with aromas of resinous ripe cherries, raspberries and strawberries while the palate shows attractive signs of cinnamon and nutmeg with puffs of smoky vanilla and hints of an earthy slate. Crisp and juicy acidity with bold tannins and an excellent finish.

According to the governing traditions the Reservas from Rioja must spend (at least) 1 year in oak barrels and 2 years in bottle; Gran Reservas spend (at least) 2 years in barrels and 3 years in bottle.

The Monte Real GR blend is 80% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano, aged in American oak casks for 24 to 30 months and in bottle for 36 months. I first sampled this in 2008 at the Astor Center's Rioja Wine Seminar where my notes are as follows:

On the nose are beautiful bright cherries with aromatic spices and ripe summer fruits, while on the palate waves of dark fruit make for an excellent balance and a lush, long finish. I did a search and PJ Wine Co. has it listed retail at $26.99. This, I believe, is an amazing value.

Here are my notes on the same wine 4 years later at the "Spain's Great Match/WineFoodDesign" held in the Metropolitan Center in NYC this past week.
Pale ruby colors in the glass with burnt orange around the rim, mild spices, white pepper, subdued, ripe cherry, smooth, mild wood, very smooth finish. Presently the SRP is $55.

Very balanced, mild sweet tannins with fresh acidity and a dark fruit finish. Love this wine!

By way of background, opening thoughts: I've formally reviewed one other old vine grenache from the Calatayud region of Spain and found it a best value.  Here's one that comes in at a slightly higher price point, and has some excellent credentials.  I am looking forward to it.

Original tasting and review, September, 2011: This is Atteca Old Vines (Grenache/Garnacha), Calatayud, Spain, 2009, finished at 15% alcohol.

In the glass: Atteca is deep, dark purple, moving to opaque within an inch of the edge.

On the nose: Poured at cool room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows brilliant aromas that flood the room.  Deep fruit, some cedar, eucalyptus and helium.  From the aroma, seems like this will be deep, mouth-filling, bold and alcoholic.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact sweet and fragrant mid-palate fruit; the sweetest, richest red berries money could buy.  Followed by soft, easy, milk-chocolate tannins that carry the sip along in a gentle unfolding way.  The alcohol never becomes apparent.  The finish remains clean and precise.  Big, perfumed, new world, bold and yet still wonderfully balanced.

In summary: Overall, rates four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus because it's almost to the point where you'd better not get between me and my bottle of Atteca!  A jaw-dropping best value at its modest price.  I mean, c'mon: a 4+ star wine made with grapes from vines over a hundred years old at such a crazy-low price point... jaw dropping.
---------------

Updated review, over a year later,  November, 2012:  Consistent flavors, but subtler now, more candied.  Fragrant red berries continue to light the way to this full sip.  Sweet boysenberry and red currants.  Yummy.

Rating: 3.8 tipsys, excellent value.

I was remembering what air was like and how much I really used to enjoy breathing it. I miss the days before the fires and smoke when undines fell from the sky, singing and gently tapping at my window beckoning me to join in their liquatious celebration. Until we meet again, I will smile with delight in anticipation of our inevitable joyous reunion. Cin Cin!Served with: Grilled sirloin steak & ratatouille. She's smooth and dry with the gentle nature, poise, and grace of royalty. Long live the queen.Comments: Now THAT'S a Bordeaux! She's delightful company and eternally sexy, kinda like Catherine Deneuve.

Naked Wine Review 107Wine: Cru Beaujolais Red Wine Grape Variety: GamayProducer: Potel-AvironVintage: 08'Region: France>Burgundy>Cru Beaujolais>JulienasPrice: 17.00Date tasted: 10/10/12Place tasted: I don't know. (don't tell the 08' I said this, but I bet the 09' might be even better...well, you know those 09's have a reputation ;)
