By way of background, opening thoughts: Lodi and zinfandel go together like a horse and carriage. Let's see what this Lodi zin brings to the party after seven years of age.
Original tasting and review : This is Wallace Zinfandel, Lodi, California, 2005, finished at 14.2% alcohol.
In the glass: Medium brick red.
On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep, funky, dark blueberry. The funkiness may blow off with a bit of air. From the aroma, seems like this will be sweet, but perhaps tired.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact balanced, fresh, sandy and sweet raspberry red. Clean and fresh finish.
In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for 'tude. But it will be risky to give too much air to the Wallace. It feels like its energy and sparkly may fade fast with much more air. Still, best value at the price point.
