Original tasting and review, September, 2011: This is Caleo Montepulciano D'Abruzzo, Italy, 2009, finished at 12.5% alcohol.
In the glass: Caleo is deep magenta in the glass. Not quite opaque anywhere.
On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows twiggy ripe plums. From the aroma, seems like this will be bright, fruity and possibly rich.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact soft and yielding - almost chocolate - savory fruit and wood in the middle of your mouth. Balanced and friendly, though not complex. Finish is clean, but brief.
In summary: Overall, creates more of an impression in the sniff and sip than in the follow. Yet, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, and is a crazy-best value at the "practically free" price.
Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Softer, less bright on the nose. The palate knits nicely. The finish lingers a little bit longer with cocoa-style tannins.

Updated review, over a year later, November, 2012: Still deep magenta with brambly fruit. Clean, light, old-world-feel in the mid-palate. Fresh clean finish still, and still three stars.
