By way of background, opening thoughts: Columbia Crest's Horse Heaven Hills Merlot fairly regularly makes lists of best value-based wines.  Let's sample the 2009 edition and see how it fares.

Original tasting and review : This is Columbia Crest Horse Heaven Hills Merlot, Washington, 2009, finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep dusty burgundy, opaque from an inch of the edge.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows thick rivulets of dark purple ink with eucalyptus overtones, suggesting an overpowering aromatically-defined mid palate.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact bright yet deep and dark ripe black currant and ripe black plum fruit, languishing on your tongue before sneaking to the corners of your cheeks.  there they settle, spitting light burst of black fruit and tannins for a full minute before fading cleanly.

In summary: Overall, rates four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, creating an awesome best value.
