By way of background, opening thoughts: Sometimes the "kitchen sink" blends create a nice, balanced wine, particularly in the bargain price category.  Today we will be trying such a blend from various California reds.

Original tasting and review : This is Apothic Red Winemaker's Blend, California, 2010, finished at 13.% alcohol.  It is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot and zinfandel.

In the glass: Deep burgundy red, opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep, lightly oaked fruit, suggesting a long, sweet and smoky palate.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact sweeter, slicker and thicker than anticipated, with rich zinfandel creating the core of the flavors. Red fruit enters into the center palate, also quite rich and sweet.  The fullness and sweetness is surprising given the quite modest alcohol level.  A touch of oak comes into the full, lasting finish.  What Apothic Red may not provide in balance or layers, it provides in pleasure.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a full-fledged best value at its "practically free" price point.
